10 April 2008 - 12:16Lawn mower seat/sitting on lawn mower problem! HELP?

Mr. man asked:

I can start up my seated lawn mower just fine. But sitting on the seat is the problem. Recently our lawn mower was repaired *blades completely unrelated* and a fat repairman guy not fat obese repairman fixed it and adjusted our seat *were short people* so he could sit on it and start it up. He moved our seat back which we moved up and fixed. But now when we sit on our lawn mower it stalls out like were not on it in the first place. This was never a problem. I know it’s a safety feature to have weight on the seat and if theres no weight your not on the mower so it stops. Now we can’t sit on it right because it will stall. We either have to lean back as hard as we can. Or sit with half our weight forward and lean back. It gets quite complicated but what can I do? Is there an easy way to adjust the amount of weight required on the seat. Or does it have to be repaired again. Which the fat man came in about last week and we haven’t used our mower since.

10 April 2008 - 10:33lawn care specialists: does “putting in a lawn” include fertilizer and mulch?

Traveler asked:

I was given an estimate from a local “lawn care specialist” to put in a lawn: spreading 20 yards of top soil and planting seed over and area that is 1/10th of an acre for $800.00. Just before putting the seed down he told me he forgot to add fertilizer and hay for mulch. He insisted that at the very least I need the hay which will cost and additional $200.00 and fertilizer would be “a bit more”.

I assumed when he gave me an estimate to put a lawn over a bare already graded area, that fertilizer and mulch were included in the price. I have not paid the final half yet and want other opinions as to whether these items are typically part of an estimate.

I feel this to be similar to being told that a visiting nurse will cost $180.00 for a four hour visit that will cover an exam and dressing changes, then after she shows up be told that the sterile gauze and normal saline will be an additional $45 or the wound will just be left open!

1 April 2008 - 20:46Lawn Mower?

“!” asked:

Dad was up early Saturday morning mowing with a gas lawn mower around some trees near our pond. The grass was still wet from the dew, which made the slope he was mowing very slick. While lifting an evergreen branch, Dad’s foot slipped under the mower!
He was very lucky, the blade didn’t cut through his shoes. It did whack his big toe a few times before he managed to pull his foot out though.
A few days later, Dad was telling the story to a neighbor, and showing him his bruised and swollen toe. The neighbor took a close look at the toe and then said, “Looks like you need to sharpen your lawn mower blade.”

31 March 2008 - 15:29Lawn mower problems?

SapphireB asked:

I have a Murray 22″ cut 4.0 HP Spirit push mower. I was mowing the grass and it was running fine.I decided to replace the blade on it as the blade was worn out. While I had it on its side, I decided to change the oil in it as well. I cleaned out all the grass that was caked on under the deck. I put the lawn mower back on the ground and was going to try to start it as I was going to mow some more. The mower is only about 2 years old. I have only had to push the primer button 3 or 4 times and fires right up every time. Anyway, when I got ready to start the mower, I pulled the cord on it a couple of times and it locked up on me. I could turn the blade manually (hard to turn) but I turn it and free it up and pull the cord again and the same thing would happen again, it would lock up.I have done this same thing several times, it locks up I turn the blade manually and 3 pulls it locks up. Help me out, what is causing this problem.
The blade will not turn at all now even by hand, it is locked up tight. I have removed the spark plug all the way. Would it be ok to drain all the oil out now and try to pull the cord again? Not to try to start, just to try to free it up?
I have drained all the oil out of it. It is locked up tighter than a drum. I can’t get any thing to move at all.I wish there was someone that could at least email me about this so that they can walk me threw all the problems that I am having with it. My dad worked on mowers him self for over 50 years, but his is now 83 and can not help me with this problem. He thinks that it is a piston that is causing the problem. The mower was running fine and not making any kind of noise at all.I can not afford to take it in and get it fix.I’m trying to learn how to fix things myself if at all possible to save me money. I need some more help here please.
I have taken off the top part of the mower where the reel coil is at. Pulled the cord and it pulls freely and rewinds back in with no problem. The fly wheel will not turn at all.At one time I could manaully turn the blade even though it was hard and get it to moving a bit and then pull the cord a couple of times before it would lock up again. But can’t even do that now.

I will post it on here with this question when I do get this problem solved. So until you see it wrote here that it is running yet..it is still locked up.
