Fall lawn care in Upstate New York?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008
rapha76 asked:

I would like some advice as to what to do about my lawn so that it looks good in the spring. Right now the lawn has a lot of weeds and some bare spots. Basically, I need to grow new grass, feed what’s already there and prevent weeds in the spring but I don’t know when and what I should apply to do this. Please don’t recommend a lawn care company. I am not looking for the perfect lawn but I know there are things I could be doing to improve it. I have a spreader and I’m all ready to get to work. Thanks for your help!

Lawn Mower problem?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008
Jeff B asked:

I need help from you lawn mower experts. I have a LawnBoy mower (Push mower) Last year it ran great. Now when I start it, it sounds like it is going on and off. No matter how I set the idle it sounds like either it is being starved by fuel or by air. I checked the filter and it is clean. It stays running for about two seconds, then almost shuts off, then comes back alive again, over and over. It’s a real pain to cut the lawn like this.

Could it be the gas? I had this gas left over from last year. I’m 65% sure I mixed the proper oil but can’t guarantee it. I used the same gas last year and it ran fine.

Thanks in advance for your help

Does an Electric Lawn Mower Make Sense for Us?

Friday, January 18th, 2008
L G asked:

I am thinking of getting a cordless elecrtic lawn mower for my husband to use (I don’t do yard work). We have a very small yard, with maybe 400 sq. ft. of grass to mow. Right now, we have an old gas-powered mower that’s been handed down several times. It’s a pain to start up, keep gassed up, and use, so my husband mows less often than he should.

Is an electric lawn mower worth the price, especially considering we only have a small yard? We do have an outlet outside where it can be recharged - how often will it have to be charged, and for how long? Will it really be easier to use and more convenient than a gas-powered mower?

Lawn mower is smoking! pls help?

Monday, January 14th, 2008
GAgirl asked:

Okay so I bought my Toro lawn mower last November. I used it once and then covered it up and waited for summer. Summer came and I have used the lawn mower about 5 times. Well this weekend I was using it and smoke started coming out of the holes of the metal panel on the side of the lawn mower. I know I should have changed the oil, not stored it with gas in it, used a gas stabilizer or something. All of which I read in the manual last night. Too little; too late right. So now I dont know what to do to fix the problem. I’m scared I may have ruined a $500 lawn mower. So any ideas of why its smoking?? Should I change the filter or maybe the spark plug or buy a gas stabilizer or change the oil?? Or just bite the bullet and take it to a shop?
also anyone know why you are supposed to change the oil after only two hours the first time you use it? What happens if you dont, can you ruin the engine? I checked the oil and it looks clear and its not over filled or anything….

Lawn Mower Carburetor Problem?

Thursday, January 10th, 2008
havanasunrise87 asked:

I was taking apart my lawn mower, Briggs and Stratton 6.5 HP motor. I was checking out the Carburetor and i took apart the little cup on the bottom of the Carburetor. Inside was a plastic thing that floated there, i pulled the pin off that connected it to the lawn mower, and went to take the plastic piece off, when i think something else came flying off. When i went to put the plastic piece back on it just falls right down, instead of floating there and the lawn mower does not start. Anyone know what this piece is that is missing??
