Lawn mower floods all of a sudden?

rena k asked:

It sat all year. I put gas in it. It finally started. Before It was used the next day a friend took apart the silver cup under the push start on the side of the lawn mower and cleaned it all out, and added new gas. Now when he went to start it, it sputters runs for a bit and dies because gas is leaking out all over. Friend says that the cup on the side is supposed to hold the gas and then stop and it keeps running so it spills out everywhere. What can I do to stop this.
