    The dark most lights works from the battery so they will light up anyway unless your batts gone flat.

    There are two types, one works with the engine off and the other only with the engine running. I have two sears mowers and one of each. Actually the one that works with the engine off is a garden tractor. The lawn tractor has a system seperate from the battery charging system to power the lights.
